Dirk Fransaer is the Managing Director of VITO, the Flemish Institute for Technological Research, the largest research institute in Belgium. VITO focuses on interdisciplinary research into cleantech, on sustainable development and on pilot installations and demonstrators in order to de-risk research for companies and thereby strengthen the economic and social fabric of Flanders.
Before joining VITO, he worked as an assistant professor in the Laboratory for Hydraulics at Ghent University, at Baxter, a large American pharmaceutical company, in the area of artificial organs, and for 13 years at Eurosense as a project engineer in the field of earth observation and remote sensing.
He is the author and co-author of more than 30 scientific papers published in national and international journals.
Dirk is Chairman of LIBOVITO, a wholly owned subsidiary in Beijing, Chairman of the Board of Directors of VITO ME (Qatar), Chairman of the Board of Directors of VITO Arabia (Dubai), Director of VITO Asia (Hong Kong), Chairman of the Audit Committee and Chairman of the Training Evaluation Board of the University of Antwerp, member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts and Honorary Professor of Engineering at KU Leuven.
